Google Chrome: First Impressions

by Brad Walker 19. September 2008 08:04

I just downloaded the new browser by Google, called Chrome, and have had an opportunity to use it for a few days and while it is still in Beta, it offers a satisfying user experience aside from a couple of minor issues.

Chrome uses similar technologies as Safari so it renders web pages in a similar fashion and I found that doing daily tasks such as email, browsing the Wiki, and general surfing the browser has very few issues.  One web site that I did have problems with was our online banking and other users have reported similar occurances  The only other major issue that I encountered is that when opening tabs, Chrome simply stacks the tabs so that the title bar becomes more or less invisible.  This really starts to occur when you have about twenty or so tabs open.  This is a minor issue that should be fixed before release.

Of course Chrome does have some unique features that set it apart from Safari.  Each browser tab that is opened is its own seperate process and you can view the resources used by each tab and see which if one tab is consuming more resources than another.  This same feature is also supposed to ensure that if one page you are visiting crashes, you do not have to restart the whole browser, only close the one tab that is causing problems.  I say that it is supposed to perform this way because I was unable to crash the browser in my time using it.

Another feature that could see some use is the Incognito mode that is offered.  Browsing in Incognito mode causes the browser not to save anybrowsing history information or cookies so another user will be unable to see what you were doing.  This type of functionality can be achieved in Firefox by downloading a third party extension, but it's nice to see it built into the browser out of the box.

So far I have found Google Chrome to offer a satisfying expereince and while I'm not ready to switch from Firefox, Chrome is certainly on the right track in my eyes.  Have you had the opportunity to try out Google Chrome?  If so, what are your thoughts?  If not, you can download it at http://www.google.com/chrome.

No, that's not a typo.

In Latin, the letter "V" is
pronounced like today's letter "U".
So, "Forvm" is pronounced "Forum".

We liked the Roman continuity with the
company's name. Besides - everyone's
got a blog, but how many companies
have a Forvm?
